Kottayam

Famous as the land of three Ls—letters, lakes and latex, Kottayam is one of the most beautiful places in Kerala. Bordered by the Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and green paddy fields in the west, Kottayam is set against a stunning landscape.

Kottayam was also referred to as Akshara Nagari or the Land of letters. It was one of the main centers of literature in ancient India. The town, in fact, has the distinction of being the first 100 percent literate municipal town. The town gained national fame with the Vaikom Satyagraha of 1924 against untouchability, led by Mahatma Gandhi. It has been a place associated with history. During the British period, Christian missionaries came to town, establishing churches. This led to a beautiful juxtaposition of two cultures at the same place.

Kottayam has a pleasant climate throughout the year. The local cuisine of Kerala has undergone a Syrian Christian influence here and is equally interesting. Dance and art thrives in the town and gives us glimpses of ancient India and its rich culture. With its verdant green landscape and beautiful lakes, Kottayam leaves an unforgettable impression.
