Salem

Salem is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is surrounded by hills. In fact, the name Salem is derived from the word “sailam” meaning an area surrounded by mountains. Tamil Nadu’s fourth largest city, Salem is famous for its temples, handloom and stainless steel.

The town was a part of the Vijayanagara Empire. There are numerous forts and temples within the city which date back to a previous era altogether. The city is surrounded by hills Nagaramalai on the north, Jarugumalai on the south, Kanjamalai on the west, Godumalai on the east and the Sheoy Hills on the northeast. The Thirumanimutharu River divides the city into two parts. Salem has a number of temples situated in the hills, such as the Oothumali Murugan Temple, Pandurangan Hill Temple and Murugan Temple.

Salem has a cool and pleasant climate throughout the year. During the month of July, Mariamman festival is celebrated in Salem for 15 days. This attracts a large number of tourists. The Yercaud Hills are located close by which is a famous tourist attraction near Salem. The city, set against a breathtaking landscape, is a nature lover’s paradise.
