About Silchar
Silchar is the second largest city in the Indian state of Assam. The scenic city is situated on the Barak River. It is flanked by the state of Manipur on its east, Bangladesh on the west, Mizoram on the south, and the Barai Hills in the north.
Being the most politically city in the area, it earned the title of “Island of Peace”. The British tea planters settled here rediscovered the game of polo in Silchar. It was here that the first polo club in the world was established. The hilly landscape is covered by vast stretches of tea plantations. The city was previously referred to as Shiller Chor which translates as “a bank of stones”. Later it was given the name Silchar.
Silchar is also known as Barak Valley, as it is situated on the banks of the Barak River. It is a picturesque town, also serving as a gateway to the hills of Manipur and Mizoram. 90% percent of the residents are Bengali. The local cuisine is a mix of Bengali and Assamese food.
